Review for Yell.com
Replies for Yell.com
I was talked in to taking out an advert with Yell.com, not my best choice.
If you want to upgrade your account they are there straight away but if you have a problem the staff don’t call you back for days.
There are a lot better platforms for advertising out there, I think Yell rely on the kudos of the Yellow Pages.
March 10, 2020 @ 12:09
I used yell for my first website. The website itself was well designed and looked good but was expensive and had a monthly charge of about £40.00!
Yell will try and sell you as many products as possible like seo and higher rankings on their search pages - do not bother with them!
Very poor return on investment - hardly any response from ads despite paying extra to higher on their pages.
Customer services is absolutely terrible - especially if you want to cancel a product - you call them and they won’t deal with your issue but insist you wait 48hrs minimum for your account manager (pushy sales man) to call you - who will then try and persuade you to spend more money on other products - Yell is a sinking ship.

Have the standard page on yell.com.
The prices and lack of promises of what they offer coupled with the constant calls from “account managers” lead me to avoid and recommend you avoid any premium services.

I have had a free listing on yell.com for over 5 years. I was approached by one of their salesmen to open a paid for listing however believed it wasn't for me and a bit pricey. I am aware of more than one job which has arisen because of my free listing

A waste of money. Paid for fourteen months to have top listing and didn't get one customer. Now on free listing and still nothing. I do get the occasional cold sale call through it.

Complete waist of time yell.com DO NOT PRECEDE WITH ANYTHING THEY OFFER YOU.
I've learned the hard way Do not dive them your money.
I have given them a chance for 9 painful months and no return apart from sales emails. You're chances will be better playing the lottery.

I have just removed my company from yell, I feel the endless calls from customer service is a joke, they clearly dont communicate as the left hand dont no what the right hand is doing,
Expensive for the service they offer and the feed back from customers is that they did not use them to find my company, I asked 25 customer in a row if they had used yell to find me and every customer replied no,
Being tired into 12 month contracts too, so your wasting funds that could be put to better use

Well what can I tell you about Yell, pushy sales tactics, abysmal service, trust me you will get no work from this whatsoever. Customers don’t look for tradesmen on yell anymore, people are going to places like, Expert trades, Checkatrade and Trustatrader, even just a simple google search in their area.

I signed up to yell for a free listing when I went self employed and was constantly hounded by there staff to pay for additional advertising, they are rude when you decline there offer and I would advise anyone to avoid them at all costs.

I signed up for the free listing when I started as self employed. I was continually hounded to upgrade as it would be in my interest, even at their extortionate prices. My funds where very limited due to starting out, but they tried to assure me of the investment. By far, one of the worst companies I've had dealings with.

August 15, 2019 @ 05:20
My first ever dealing with Yell wasn't pleasant. After applying for a free advert I was called by an agent that got me to sign up to a package costing £70. I feel like I was pressurised into the sale as I like to have a read about what I'm buying, the agent was so good that I gave my details there and then. It was only after putting down the phone that I thought I had been done over. I called the agent back straight away and she didn't want to know about me cancelling and simply quoted the business to business clause and told me tough. Will never trust Yell again and i am getting calls to add more features, I promptly tell them no!
Waste of money, haven't had a single job from it and only 2 enquiries since Feb 2019!!
Run for the hills if your ever approached!!

What a huge mistake! Started off looking to get a free listing and ended up having a conversation with a sales person who led me to believe that I could improve my profile and lead generation at little cost. After a number of calls and sacrificing a fair amount of my time it seemed to stack up quite nicely until I discovered a £48 payment to Yell which I thought was a "one off". Following the next £48 payment I called to contest the charge. There is no paper contract and I was told that the telephone conversation amounted to a contract and I was welcome to a transcript of our conversations to evidence this. My next question related to the "cooling off period" only to be told that there isn't one and the I was now locked into a 12 month contract! I made it clear that I wanted out after the 12 months which ended in June 2019 but hey presto, £48 disappeared out my account today! Spent the afternoon sorting it with Yell but at the end of the day it was a £576 mistake. Let the buyer beware............

Having been sold a product and told I would have more work than I could cope with, I’m very disappointed with what I’ve had from Yell. I’ll probably break even over the 12 months with what I’ve spent and payed.
On the positive side, the website looks fantastic and the app is very useful for getting reviews and viewing the traffic through my page.
I will not be renewing my sponsored ad next year but will probably keep the website

I have advertised with yell over the years, in different formats, yellow pages were over priced, and as good as useless, but that is now no more.
I have two sponsored ads on yell.com, emergency plumbing, and 24hr plumbers, both are reasonably cheap as I am listed position 2 on 1 ad, and position 3 on the other, for what they cost a year, 2 -3 call outs pay for them, In my opinion anythig else is a waste of money.

We spent a lot of money with Yell over a five year period and to be honest it has gone downhill drastically. The sales people in the call centres don't listen. don't make any notes of discussions and are generally only interested in selling you more advertising.
If yell was the last place on earth to advertise, I would rather walk down the high street naked with a sandwich board

I have been with Yell for about four years. There products aren't to bad and a lot of my leads come through yell adverts and website. They generate more business for me, than anything else. Downside is they keep trying to sell you more and more and they move the goal posts relating to advert classification and costings. I'm sure there is probably a better option about, but, I haven't found it yet. It's not the best value for money, but it gets your name out there albeit limited to specific areas.

Yell came to me. I met up with one of their reps at the time of been trading 2 months and they knew it, they promised me a large return in leads. We discussed packages and they pushed and pushed for me to have exclusivity in a certain post code. I'm a sole trader, how could I cope with that volume? But they pushed (they wanted about £4k for the year) knowing I was a new company sole trader, this is terrible attitude and greed. Fortunately, I declined the 'offer'. So glad I did. They they went ahead and listed me for free with no perks or exclusivity. So?

I only have a listing online no website etc was told that I had missed the cut off point to go in the book the 1st year but that I would be in the next issue, this never happened because apparently they changed their terms and you need to pay extra to go in needless to say they didnt tell me and i missed out again. Oh and the prices had gone up despite it being less of a service. I will be cancelling after this term and just having the free listing!

Question for Yell.com
Answers for Yell.com
I'm looking to try and grow my business now and keep looking at yell. Just read reviews for rated people and Checkatrade and yell and it seems to be a very mixed bag. If you have £1000 to spend on marketing where are you guys putting it?
Bright gas - answer on April 19, 2017 @ 05:44

GRT heating & Gas services - answer on April 19, 2017 @ 05:45
I Signed up with yell , wasted my money on that one. Checkatrade is worth a look
SJL Plumbing and Heating - answer on April 19, 2017 @ 05:50
Give it all to Adam and fordy! They will sort you out. I cancelled my yell as I couldn't spend enough to rank highly. I've spent around £1000 on rated people in the last 2 years it's easily paid for itself 10 times over and the reviews can be viewed without anyone logging in which has won me work without buying the lead. I have no experience of checkatrade I know I couldn't get my builder off the ground as there's too much competition from people who have hundreds of reviews. My website from ET, my van signage, my free yell advert and a Facebook page (linked to my reviews on rated people) are all I have. Hope that helps!

I have been with Yell for that past 6 months and to be honest I got more leads from checkatrade than I have from Yell. You don't get any support from either checkatrade or yell which they promise when signing up from my past experience I would spend my money else where like Facebook as I have got a hell of a lot more work through there with a lot less than a £1000 budget.

I would have a couple of options.
1. Use the £1000 to cover my wages for a week and get flyers and business cards printed. Then spend 60 hours getting face to face with local businesses and local people. When I try to do this is always works. I don't think I've ever managed more than a solid 2 hour stint of it in a month never mind a week yet it always brings in a job or 2. I have to think that putting maximum effort into it for week would get great returns, i just never have the time to do it around my other works.
2. I would hit Rated People. I know a lot of people do not like this (and similar) service but I have always had a great return from it only by cherry picking the best looking jobs (this month alone I have won £2000+ worth of work spending less than £50 on there). I only aim for the jobs that I think I will easily win and not have to compete on price too much. I think that spending the full 1K on there and being more willing to 'lose' some of the leads you payed for will easily get a great return, it will also give me 100+ more contacts that might lead to more work via word of mouth.

Word of mouth for us so the £1k would probably be spent on social media as that's where all our business comes from.
Everyone seems to have a device in their hand permanently nowadays so, Instagram, Facebook, LinkedIn..... These work for us & we're growing quicker than I ever imagined, good luck......

Local magazines. Van Sign writting. Builders board's outside jobs.
Yell, checkatrade etc will take all your money and only market you on the site. you still have to market yourself for them to work.

It's hard to say . But I've found over the last few years the results from yell drop year on year . While the price has remained static . When I questioned the sales rep regards this all she wanted to do was sell a web site and advertising .

Hi, I'm currently with Checkatrade worked well about 3 years ago but now seems to have bottomed out, also tried Yell a few years ago I personally found it crap nothing from it.
We are on my builder also get a regular flow of enquiries however we don't follow them up as we have a steady steam of business through our website which we have had about 4 years now, we passed it over to Adam at expert trades to really make it work for us and to be fair the last 12 months adam and his team have increased and generated our own traffic which we seem to convert in to business.
Hope this helps but in my opinion avoid Yell

Mybuilder.com has its downfalls but for me in personal experience you get far more for your money that any similar site. If I'm ever quiet I can always find work on there on average I'd say from a 30 pound spend you can anywhere between 350/500 pounds of profit

I spent a lot of money with Yell in my first year of trading and I didn't see any benefit at all, all they was bothered about was selling me more things, they was always call me saying you need a website and you can upgrade etc. I was disappointed, it was more about money than actually getting me work

I would look at a website with pay per click advertising on Google; Social Media and advertising in local magazines.
Word of mouth is better than a yellow pages advert, but back it up with flyers and leaflets in your local area. Don't expect a massive response on your first campaign as it takes a while for confidence to build in a new business.
The guys at Expert Trades can help with the website & SEO.
